3 ways to say “Really?”

本当(ほんとう)?

本当(ほんとう)/ Hontou / Really

It’s the most basic word.
It can be used among friends or in a business context.

When you want to use it in sentences, you can just add “に (Ni)“.

あなた本当に忍者なの?

あなた ほんとう に にんじゃ なの?

Anata hontou ni ninja nano?

Do you really want to throw this ring away?

本当にこの指輪捨てるの?

Hontou ni kono yubiwa suteruno?

*指輪(ゆびわ)/ Yubiwa / ring

まじ

まじ / Maji / Really

This is a casual expression, but I think it’s the most commonly used one.
You can’t use it in a business context, so be careful.

Also, if you want to use it in sentences, you can just add “で (De)“.

The transfer student is really cute.

ガチ

ガチ(がち)/ Gachi / Really

This is an even more casual way of saying it than “seriously.
It’s used in exactly the same way as まじ.

ガチで仕事変えたい。

がちで しごと かえたい。

Gachi de shigoto kaetai.

Are you really going to move to America?

ガチでアメリカに移住するの?

がちで あめりか に いじゅう するの?

Gachi de america ni ijuu suruno?

This is how I use the three words, depending on the person I’m talking to and the conversation.

If it’s difficult to remember all three, just remember 本当?

Use them as much as you can, and speak native-like Japanese!
