Today, let’s study some Japanese words related to the beginning of the year!

あけまして、おめでとうございます

The first greeting of the New Year is not おはよう or こんにちは.

It’s あけまして、おめでとうございます
(Akemashite Omedetougozaimasu)

This phrase is used throughout the month of January, not just at the moment the year changes.

I think people say or scream “Happy New Year!” at January 1, 12:00 a.m in abroad.

But we don’t scream あけまして、おめでとうございます！
This is more like a greeting phrase.

今年も、よろしくお願いいたします

And what I’d like you to remember in combination with あけまして、おめでとうございます is,

“今年も、よろしくお願いいたします“（ことしも、よろしくおねがいいたします）
(Kotoshimo yoroshilku onegaiitashimasu)

This has the meaning of “Please keep in touch this year”!

We always say this phrase after あけましておめでとうございます,
so these two phrases are a set!

あけおめ/ことよろ

Now we’ve learned two very important phrases!
But in the younger generation or among friends, these two phrases are abbreviated to this.

Japanese people really like to abbreviate words, don’t they?lol

This is much easier to say than the original phrase but don’t use it to your boss!

良いお年を

And finally, there is an extra word that I want you to remember.

It is a word that is used only for about a week after Christmas until the new year.

良いお年を（よい おとしを）
(Yoi otoshi wo)

It means “Have a good year”!
This is used when you think that this is the last time you will see this person for the rest of the year.
